The sounds of big band jazz are alive and well in Downtown Sanford, as the Sanford Jazz Ensemble ushers in the holiday season at the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center. The SJE will feature the dynamic trumpet of Bill Carmichael. Bill’s high-powered style brings a fresh energy to the classic big band. In keeping with the spirit of the season, the band will also present a program of Christmas favorites, showcasing the “First Lady of Song”, Linda Cole and a reunion with vocalist Ron Starks.
The Sanford Jazz Ensemble is dedicated to bringing the best in jazz to the community, having recently showcased jazz artists, Dan Jordan, Jeff Rupert, Tom Parmerter, Dave Weaver and Bill Allred, in concert.
The group originated in Altamonte Springs in l979, with founder Mike Arena, but relocated to Sanford in 2010 under Director, Dave Sheffield. The SJE will finish out this season with a March 24th, 2013, concert featuring popular singer-guitarist Rich Walker, and a May 19th concert that will display the talents of Seminole County’s outstanding high school jazz musicians.
The WDPAC has proven to be an excellent venue for the band. With great acoustics and comfortable seatings, the shows are treasured by Central Florida jazz fans. The concerts all take place at 3:00 in the afternoon and are only $10 admission, $5 with student ID.
